Twenty industry experts have been invited to speak at the Global Softwood Log & Lumber Conference in Vancouver as well as eight industry experts for the two-panel sessions (one each day). The conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Vancouver, BC May 9-10, 2018.

One of the key topics to be discussed will be around the potential of a U.S. lumber “supercycle” that has been predicted for some time. There are some that think the recent record lumber prices are just a preview of what is yet to come, as even higher prices could be coming later in 2019 or early 2020. This will depend on the speakers’ view of key supply constraints in Canada coupled with a wave of new sawmill investments planned in the U.S. South.

As U.S. consumption continues to expand (~2 billion bf per year), there is the possibility of a more sustained price supercycle (at higher levels) until U.S. lumber demand slows (in 2021 or 2022). Log and lumber supply and demand always balance, and history shows that higher prices don’t normally last long in the lumber business. However, we are in some interesting times, with many unknowns ahead. You can bet many speakers and delegates will have these questions on their minds at the Vancouver Conference on May 9 and 10.
