The Georgia Forestry Foundation (GFF), in collaboration with the USDA Forest Service and Wood Works, is organizing a series of meetings across the state to raise awareness and encourage the use of mass timber construction. Mass timber is an innovative engineered wood product that offers improved construction performance and reduced carbon footprint.
Bringing Together Industry Professionals
The meetings will bring together local architecture, engineering, construction, and development teams to highlight the key benefits of mass timber construction. The goal is to address any challenges that may hinder the widespread adoption of mass timber as a primary structural material. The meetings are strategically located in centers of population growth and economic development, including Atlanta, Savannah, Columbus, Macon, and Athens.
Transforming Georgia’s Forestry and Construction Industries
According to Matt Hestad, Senior Vice President of the Georgia Forestry Association and Foundation, mass timber represents a transformative opportunity for Georgia’s forestry and construction industries. With the state leading the nation in sustainable forest products, Georgia is uniquely positioned to showcase the innovation, carbon reduction, and economic growth potential of locally sourced wood.
Upcoming Meetings
The first meeting will take place in Columbus on January 30, followed by meetings in Savannah, Georgia on February 25 and Athens, GA on March 20. Dates for meetings in Macon and Atlanta will be announced soon. These events are crucial for the future of Georgia’s built environment, as mass timber construction gains recognition as a sustainable and modern construction solution. With over 26 completed or in-progress mass timber buildings across the state, the meetings aim to further promote the use of this innovative construction method.
The Mass Timber Accelerator Program
The creation of these meetings is a result of the Mass Timber Accelerator Program launched in Atlanta. The program, funded by the USDA Forest Service and the Softwood Lumber Board, serves as a platform for advancing innovative wood design. It provides architects, engineers, and developers with the necessary resources and support to elevate mass timber projects throughout Georgia.
