OTTAWA, BUSINESS WIRE –BioTalent Canada has announced the extension of its green jobs wage subsidy program. The Science and Technology Internship Program—Green Jobs (STIP), funded by the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment and Skills Strategy, helps Canadian youth start careers within Canada’s green economy. This includes organizations in energy, forestry, earth sciences, and minerals and metals.

“This wage subsidy helps infuse young talent into Canada’s natural resources sector,” says Rob Henderson, President and CEO of BioTalent Canada. “The benefits are two-fold. Companies with an eye towards innovation can access funds to deepen its talent pool and young talented Canadians start their careers in an emerging industry.”

BioTalent Canada wage subsidies have helped shape the future of Canadian bio-economy since 2005. More than 2,500 Canadians have started their careers through BioTalent Canada programs. STIP—Green Jobs placed 62 new grads in the program’s inaugural year. This new funding is part of the overall Government of Canada’s COVID-19 response for youth and students as announced on April 22nd, 2020.

“Through research, we’ve discovered that cultivation and retention of new talent are two of the greatest challenges faced by Canadian bio-economy employers,” adds Henderson. “Our belief is that wage subsidy programs mitigate the risk of new hires and turn those challenges into growth opportunities.”

Organizations that qualify for the STIP—Green Jobs wage subsidy are eligible to have 75% of a new hire’s salary covered up to $22,500 per year and up to $30,000 annually for youth furthest from employment. These funds can help pay for onboarding and training of young, innovative minds.

“As we build the net-zero economy, we are expanding employment and STEM skills development for young people,” says The Honourable Seamus O’Regan, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources. “We are creating green jobs for young Canadian workers to help ensure our natural resource sectors remain a source of opportunity.”

The Science and Technology Internship Program—Green Jobs is one of several wage subsidy programs delivered by BioTalent Canada. Learn more about which programs your organizations may qualify for.
