Last year, Ontario Wood WORKS! developed and published a comprehensive wood bridge reference guide to encourage and support the development of more wood bridges in Ontario: http://wood-works.ca/now-available-ontario-wood-bridge-reference-guide/).

Building on the success of the guide, Ontario Wood WORKS! has developed a half-day breakfast workshop to be held in Sudbury on June 12th at the Living with Lakes Centre (on the Laurentian University campus). It is a free event primarily designed for the benefit of municipalities, MTO, bridge engineers, and related industry professionals engaged in road bridge design/specification/ approvals. More information about the event and online registration can be found here: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/wood-bridge-design-breakfast-workshop-sudbury-on-tickets-61792710661

09:15-09:30 Centennial Bridge Case Study and

Timelapse Construction Video

Glen Prevost, MFC, P.Eng., Industry Advisor, FPInnovations

The recent failure of a culvert system at the Petawawa Research Forest impacted the movement of logging trucks, vehicles, and research teams. The failure negatively impacted water flow and habitat. FPInnovations collaborated with different partners and stakeholders to design a modern, single-lane bridge out of engineered wood products (EWPs), in accordance to CSA S6-14 Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC) with CL-625ON Truck Load. The bridge, called the Centennial Bridge, is an excellent example of how a modern forest access road bridge can be built with new EWPs. It demonstrates that timber bridges can be compatible with municipal and resource access needs when constructing water crossings. Timber bridges offer benefits such as competitive cost, prefabricated construction, carbon sequestration, and excellent aesthetic appeal.

Engineer, Entuitive

Wood bridges have a long history of construction and use throughout North America for roads, railways and logging roads. This new guide, published in 2018, provides designers with up-to-date information to facilitate the design of wooden bridges for main and secondary roads. It presents, among other things, available bridge systems and materials, various examples of road bridges, highlights of the current edition of S6, and a complete design example of a wood highway bridge. We will walk through the main content of the reference guide.

10:30-10:45 Break

10:45-12:00 Technical Briefing (Part 2)

Wood Bridge Design Example

David Moses & Andrew Lehan

Highway bridges comprised of glued-laminated timber deck panels supported by glued-laminated timber girders are commonplace in American timber bridge engineering. The use of this system has been rare in Canada, likely because it has not been well-addressed by the Canadian High-way Bridge Design Code. Recent additions to the code, along with renewed interest in wood highway bridges, make this system an attractive addition to the Canadian market. A fully worked superstructure design is presented for an 18m single span bridge. Materials, loads, structural analysis, member design, connection design, and preferred detailing for durability are presented.
