The new owners of Hefler Forest Products in Middle Sackville, N.S., are slowing re-opening the shuttered sawmill, building on the solid foundation of the mill’s biomass power plant. The 3.1-megawatt power plant is under a 20-year contract with Nova Scotia Power.
Stan Mason of Katalyst Wind and Trevor Hennigar of Hawthorne Capital purchased the lumber company’s assets in April. The biomass facility has been running at 60-90 per cent of capacity, Mason told the Chronicle-Herald newspaper.
Recently, the kiln has been put back in operation drying lumber for another sawmill, Ledwidge Lumber in nearby Enfield. The planer is also starting up, on contract to another local sawmill.
