Controversy once again dogs the Northern Pulp mill in New Glasgow, N.S., after a signing event for a book about the history of the mill was cancelled. The Coles bookstore in New Glasgow informed author Joan Baxter that her book signing for The Mill: Fifty Years of Pulp and Protest would not proceed due to fears of protests.
CBC News reports that Indigo, the parent company of Coles, said it cancelled the event due to due to a number of factors, “including aggressive conversations directed to store staff.”
Northern Pulp communications director Kathy Cloutier told CBC News the company does not condone aggressive actions.
“In fact, employees and others were encouraged to voice their opinions — should they choose to — in the form of letters rather than specific actions such as protests,” she said in an email.
Northern Pulp workers object to the book “depicting their workplace in such negative unbalanced fashion,” Cloutier said in her email.
